It is a dream of every artist to get a number 1 song in the Billboard Chart, but very few achieve it. Every artist gives their best to put a song that will please everyone’s ears, but not every artist succeeds in doing that.
The first half of the year 2021 is over, and a lot of songs came and went, and today we are going to see which songs took the number 1 spot in the Billboard Chart.
So let us start the list:
All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey
1 Week: January 2 – January 8
Although the song was released back in 1994, it is still the biggest Christmas Hit every year. Whenever Christmas arrives, this Mariah Carey song always tops the chart. All thanks to the most Christmas-y lyrics and Carey’s amazing voice that makes this song a huge hit.
Mood - 24kGoldn ft. Iann Dior
2 Weeks: January 9 – January 22
The song was actually released back in July 2020, but it only got into the chart in the later months because it started blowing up on TikTok. We all know how popular songs get on TikTok even after so many years and months of its release. Iann Dior said that they wrote this song while playing Call of Duty and drinking beer. Who knew that song would be the number 1 song one day, and that too for two consecutive weeks.
Driver’s License - Olivia Rodrigo
8 Weeks: January 23 – March 19
The debut single of Olivia Rodrigo, that gave her worldwide recognition in the music industry, is the song “Driver’s License”. Currently, it is the biggest song of the year as it topped the chart for eight consecutive weeks, which is not a small thing for a 17 year old girl. When the song was released, it was everywhere, and is still somewhere on the chart till date.
What’s Next - Drake
1 week: March 20 – March 26
“What’s Next” is the fourth number 1 song of this Canadian rapper, and it spent one week on the chart. The beats of this song are really catchy, but I have no idea how this song didn’t blow up on TikTok. Drake is seen rapping and flexing his drip in the music video, and he probably is one of the best rappers of this generation.
Up - Cardi B
1 week: March 27 – April 2
After “WAP”, Cardi B was back with “Up”, and it became a huge hit. Also, a TikTok user created a certain dance step for the song, which got so viral on TikTok that it soon started to trend there too. Addison Rae, the third most followed TikToker at the time, also did the dance step in Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Also, there is a Disney Pixar movie of the same name, and people did meme this song a little saying that kids will be traumatized after searching “Up” on YouTube and Google, as the lyrics are very explicit.
Peaches - Justin Bieber
1 Week: April 3 – April 9
“I got my peaches out in Georgia…” was literally everywhere on Snapchat since Snapchat Music made the song available on the platform. After the disastrous response for “Yummy”, Justin Bieber did come back with a good song this time. His last number one song was “Stuck With U” with Ariana Grande in 2020, and since then have released a lot of songs like “Intentions”, “Holy”, “Monsters”, etc.
Montero (Call Me By Your Name) - Lil Nas X
1 Week: April 10 – April 16
Not to be confused with the movie of the same name starring Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer, Montero (Call Me By Your Name) was also one of the most controversial music videos of all time. Lil Nas X is seen sliding down the pole to hell from heaven, because he is gay, and that is considered as sin. Then, he is seen to be giving a lap dance to Satan, and later killing him and taking the crown of Satan. The song also became controversial due to Nike’s Satan shoes that contained a drop of human blood, which was a limited edition containing only 666 pieces, which is Satan’s number. But whatever, the song was dope.
Leave The Door Open - Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak)
2 Weeks: April 17 – April 23 and May 22 – May 28
The debut single of Silk Sonic, which is the superduo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, released their first song “Leave The Door Open” and went on to become a hit. Mars delivers really some of his best vocals, and the band really did justice to the music, and is undoubtedly one of the best songs of the year.
Rapstar - Polo G
2 Weeks: April 24 – May 7
“Rapstar” is the first number one song of Polo G, and it is also considered as one of the best storytelling rap songs. The song came into the chart just a fews days after its release and was a huge success. Currently, it holds over 100 Million views on YouTube.
Save Your Tears - The Weeknd and Ariana Grande
2 Weeks: May 8 – May 21
After giving one of the best albums of 2020, and being snubbed by the Grammys, The Weeknd is still making quality songs. “Save Your Tears” was originally one of the songs from his 2020 hit album “After Hours”, and two songs from that album: “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights” also topped the chart last year.
This is the remix version of the original song featuring Ariana Grande, and well it really didn’t disappoint us. It is also one of the best remixes of the year, and also the third collaboration between The Weeknd and Ariana Grande. Previously, they collaborated in “Off The Table” and “Love Me Harder”.
Good 4 U - Olivia Rodrigo
1 Week: May 29 – June 4
Looks like 2021 is the year of Olivia. After spending 8 weeks on the number 1 position, “Driver’s License” became one of the biggest songs of the year. Now, her other song also reached number one, making her the only artist this year to have two number ones. “Good 4 U” is also considered equivalent to Miley Cyrus’s “7 Rings”, which she wrote for Nick Nonas after they broke up. It is alleged that all of Olivia’s songs are for Joshua Bassett, as they broke up, and he started dating Sabrina Carpenter. Sounds like the Disney drama has returned after many years.
Butter - BTS
7 Weeks: June 5 – ongoing
If “Butter” spends two more weeks in the chart, then it is all set to break Olivia Rodrigo’s record for “Driver’s License”. It has already broken the record for most viewed video on YouTube in the first 24 hours, and the BTS Armys are really happy that the song has been doing so well in the chart. Last year, BTS’s other song “Dynamite” also topped the chart, and this year it’s “Butter”.
Hence, these are the twelve songs that have become the number one songs of the year in the first half of 2021. “Butter” by BTS is still ongoing and we don’t know how long it is going to stay on top.
