After Michael Jordan appeared in Space Jam back in 1996, the new trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy was released, and one thing didn’t work out straight with the audience. What went wrong? Let us get into it.
Space Jam is a live action and animated comedy movie that was first released in 1996. In the movie, the famous basketball star Michael Jordan appeared as himself, with a bunch of Looney Tunes characters. But as of 2021, the sequel to that movie has been developed and this time, we get to see another basketball star LeBron James playing himself. Although the trailer has been received well, one thing really didn’t go right.
ESPN released a video called “The Bunny & The GOAT”, where we got to see Zendaya as Lola Bunny for the first time. Although she didn’t speak much in the video, people did feel that Zendaya’s voice didn’t go well with the character.
In the first movie, Kath Soucie voiced the character of Lola Bunny, while in the new movie Zendaya voices her.
And people didn’t take this well and Zendaya’s voice acting has been criticized a lot.
Zendaya is a very popular actress who started her acting career with Disney’s Shake It Up. She also appeared as MJ in Spiderman: Homecoming and Anne in The Greatest Showman, and undoubtedly she is one of the best actresses we have in Hollywood right now. Recently, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance of Rue Bennett in the HBO series, Euphoria. She last appeared in the Netflix movie, Malcolm and Marie.
People said that Zendaya’s voice didn’t match with Lola Bunny, as we are used to hearing her with a different voice. Many pointed out that Zendaya is not a very good voice actress, while Kath Soucie is a professional voice actress and has given her voice to multiple famous cartoon characters. People said that Zendaya sounded more like herself than Lola Bunny.
Since the clip of the movie came out, fans have been divided about this topic on Twitter.
User @ScarbroughProd writes, “That voice does not match that character at all. What was wrong with an actual voice actor like Kath Soucie reprise the role? Oh yeah: because ‘Kath Soucie’ isn’t a marketable name, but ‘Zendaya’ is.”
Another user @BrosephSZN writes, “this is a prime example of how good voice actors are at their jobs and why they should be far more respected. You cannot just cast a popular actress in a voice role and expect her to be able to do the job at the same level of quality as a professional voice actor”.
@luciferverse defends and also criticizes saying, “Zendaya is a good voice actor but she doesn’t fit lola bunny since lola is more energetic and high pitched”.
@DoubleAARocks writes, “I love Zendaya, but this just sounds like her natural voice rather than a voice for Lola”.
@annagriffinart quote retweets the trailer and writes, “It doesn’t look like the character is even talking? Like,,,, I’m begging Hollywood to stop ignoring voice actors and actually HIRE THEM to do stuff they are TRAINED for. Holy fuck”.
One user @rhymik_ came to her defense saying, “Did y’all expect Zendaya not to sound like Zendaya? I’m confused”.
But talking about voice acting, you are not supposed to sound like yourself while you are giving your voice to an animated character. Previously, Zendaya has lent her voice in various movies. She voiced Lollipop in Super Buddies, Chi in Duck Duck Goose, and Meeche in Smallfoot. A YouTube singer, Gabriel Gundacker, also created a song called “Zendaya is Meeche”, which became an internet meme.
Space Jam: A New Legacy is the story of global icon LeBron James and his youngest son Dom, who wants to be a video game developer rather than a basketball star like his father. But accidentally he traps themselves in Server verse, which is a virtual space ruled by a rogue A.I. named AI-G Rhythm.
Now, LeBron must save his son with the help of Looney Tunes characters to win a basketball match against AI-G’s team Goon Squad. The Looney Tunes characters that appear in the movie are Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Lola Bunny, Porky Pig, Tasmanian Devil, Speedy Gonzales, Granny, etc.
