Olivia Rodrigo is a very known face in the music industry right now. With back to back hits like “Driver’s License”, “Deja Vu” and “Good 4 U”, this 18 year old is leading the charts at this tender age. Today we will see how Olivia Rodrigo became America’s biggest new pop star
Olivia Rodrigo was born on 20th February, 2003 in California. She has German, Filipino and Irish ancestry. As a kid, she was always interested in music and acting, and wanted to pursue her career in it. As a result, she travelled to Los Angeles for her career.
Rodrigo made her acting debut with the movie An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success, where she played the lead role of Grace Thomas. But her success came when she landed the role in Disney Channel sitcom, Bizaardvark.
In Bizaardvark, she played the leading character of Paige Olvera along with her co-star Madison Hu, who played Frankie. Paige and Frankie own a channel called Bizaardvark where they post funny videos, and that gets them into Vuuugle, which is similar to YouTube in the real world. They usually go on adventures everyday with other creators in Vuuugle.
Although the show was a moderate success, Olivia’s performance was highly praised. She also sang the theme song for the show and performed some other short songs too along with Madison Hu. Other actors in the show include Jake Paul, DeVore Ledridge, Ethan Wacker, etc.
Bizaardvark ended after three seasons, and Rodrigo landed another role of Nini in Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The show is the spin off of the very popular and hit Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical that aired around 2006.
Here, Nini is supposed to play the character of Gabriella, which was originally played by Vanessa Hudgens
Besides acting, Olivia also sang a lot of songs in the show. Not only that, she also wrote a song called “All I Want”, which garnered her a lot of attention regarding her singing talent. The song peaked at number 90 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
It is said that Rodrigo wrote that song in just 3 days. Even Taylor Swift praised the song and Rodrigo and shared it on her Instagram story.
But the major success came for Olivia, after she released her first original single, “Driver’s License”. The song was critically and commercially successful, debuting number 1 in the list of Billboard Hot 100 for 8 weeks continuously.
She also became the youngest artist to get a number 1 hit just at the age of 17. The bridge of the song “Red lights, stop signs, I still see your face…” was placed in third position in the list of Best Bridges of the 21st Century by Billboard. Now, there is no turning back for Olivia.
“Driver’s License” also broke a lot of records including Spotify record for most streams in a single day. She has also performed the song in a lot of shows such as BRIT Awards, Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, etc.
With the massive success of “Driver’s License”, she got the attention of a lot of well known artists. She has also cited herself as a very big fan of Taylor Swift, and she has inspired her music career a lot. After releasing her hit, she went on to release another song called “Deja Vu”, which was also critically acclaimed. “Deja Vu” peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Rodrigo’s other song was “Good 4 U”, which again went to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it her second song to do so.
In April, 2021, she announced her first studio album “Sour”, and it was released in May of 2021. The album peaked at number 3 in the Billboard Chart, and the song “Traitor” from the album peaked at number 9.
Personal Life and the Impact of Music:
Olivia Rodrigo was linked with Joshua Bassett, who is also her co-star in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. In the show, Joshua played the character of Ricky, who ends up with Rodrigo’s character of Nini, and they play the role of Troy and Gabriella in the school musical. Their relationship was also confirmed, but then they broke up, and Bassett started to date Girl Meets World fame actress Sabrina Carpenter.
After the release of “Driver’s License”, people speculated that the song is about her and Joshua’s relationship, and it was also targeted to Carpenter. A line in the song, “And you are probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt/ She’s so much older than me…” created a buzz all around as Sabrina Carpenter is also blonde and much older than Olivia. Although this theory has been debunked, fans still like to believe that it is true.
But things started to get messier when Sabrina Carpenter released her own song “Skin”, and one line from that song, which says, “Maybe blonde was the only rhyme” created headlines. It was said that “Skin” is the reply to “Driver’s License”. Again, at the same time, Joshua Bassett released his own song “Lie Lie Lie”, which further spiced up the drama.
But whatever the drama is, Olivia and Sabrina both still follow Joshua on Instagram, and Olivia also follows Sabrina, but she doesn’t follow her back.
Despite all these dramas, we cannot ignore the fact that Olivia Rodrigo is very talented. Recently a lot of her old singing videos have resurfaced and her voice is amazing. Also the second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has just been released on Disney+, but according to the rumors Olivia won’t be a part of the third season.
As of now, Olivia was spotted kissing Adam Faze, and it is assumed that Faze is her new boyfriend. There has not been any confirmation, but we will soon figure it out.
