Olivia Rodrigo drops her 1st studio album

Just so we know, it looks like 2021 is the year of Olivia Rodrigo. Starting from the chart topping single, Driver’s Licence, this 18 year old singer/actress has been serving since the beginning of the year.

After the massive success of Driver’s License, which topped the Billboard 100 Chart, Rodrigo went on to release her second song, Deja Vu, which became quite very popular peaking up to number 8 on the charts. Now, Rodrigo released her debut album, Sour, which consists of eleven songs.

On 13th April, Olivia announced that she is going to release her first studio album through her Instagram post. The post consists of two pictures: one is of herself covered with stickers all over her face, which is the album cover; and the second one is a picture of a balloon with the name of eleven songs from the album. The caption reads:

“my debut album SOUR out may 21st ahhhhhhhh”.

The album is finally here and we can say that it is a pretty dope album. Rodrigo dropped the lyrics videos of all these songs on YouTube. Olivia stated that the album explored her perils and discoveries as a seventeen year old girl, with its title referring to the uncomfortable sour emotions youngsters experience but are often shamed for, such as anger, jealousy and heartache. She also says that the musical style for this album was inspired by her favorite genres, and singers and songwriters.

About the sound on Sour, Rodrigo tells Nylon:

“I want [Sour] to be super versatile. My dream is to have it be an intersection between mainstream pop, folk music, and alternative pop. I love the songwriting and the lyricism and the melodies of folk music. I love the tonality of alt-rock. Obviously, I’m obsessed with pop and pop artists. So I’m going to try and take all of my sort of influences… and make something that I like.”

About the subject matter of the album, she told The Face:
“Being angry, jealous, overly emotional or sad can often be framed as being bitchy or moany. I decided to shine a light on those feelings, even though that was uncomfortable to talk about. I’ve done all I can do. Everything else is out of my hands.”

Olivia Rodrigo was already a known face for many youngsters as she was in the Disney Channel show, Bizaardvark, along with her co-star Madison Hu. Olivia also acted in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, along with Joshua Bassett, and since then the rumors of their alleged relationship started. It is also assumed that Driver’s License was about Joshua Bassett after they broke up, and he started dating Girl Meets World fame actress/singer, Sabrina Carpenter. The bridge of this song has been listed as the third-best bridge of the 21st century by Billboard.

The bridge goes:

  • “Red lights, stop signs
  • I still see your face in the white cars, front yards
  • Can’t drive past the places we use to go to
  • Cause I still fucking love you, babe
  • Sidewalks, we crossed
  • I still hear your voice in the traffic, we’re laughing
  • Over all the noise
  • God I’m so blue know we’re through
  • Cause I still fucking love you, babe”

As Olivia calls herself a big Swiftie, and we have seen her fangirling over Taylor Swift a lot of time, Olivia also cited Taylor as an inspiration for the album. Swift was credited as a songwriter in the track of the album “1 step forward, 3 steps back” because it interpolates the piano line in Swift’s song “New Year’s Day”. Besides Taylor Swift, she also names Alanis Morissette, Kacey Musgraves, No Doubt, and The White Stripes as the inspirations for the album. She also met Taylor Swift on BRITs Award, and took a picture with her, and shared it on her Instagram.

The album has received favorable reviews with Entertainment Tonight scaling it on A-. While it got 83/100 in the Metacritic score. Also ⅘ stars on The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, NME, Rolling Stone and The Times. The Independent gave it ⅗ stars. Also, it got an aggregate score of 7.3/10 on AnyDecentMusic?, 8/10 on Clash and The Best of Fit, and 7/10 on Pitchfork.
