After spending about 21 years in Barcelona, a shocking news came for the football fans when the club announced that they won’t be able to continue with Lionel Messi in the future due to “financial and structural obstacles”. Let us see what this is about.
On 6th August 2021, the football world was taken to a storm when it was announced that the football star Lionel Messi won’t be able to continue his journey in Barcelona. Although the departure was not planned, both the player and the club reached an agreement, and they are supposed to sign a new contract. However, this could not be possible due to Spanish La Liga’s regulations on player registration.
The official website of FC Barcelona broke this news writing:
“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.”
This came as a shocker as people were very sure with the devotion that Messi has been giving the club since the beginning of his career, and nobody expected this to come. During Messi’s stay in the club, he has helped a lot to uplift the standard and fan base of the club, winning multiple trophies for the club.
Talking about the statistics, the Argentine star has played 778 games, scored 672 goals and 305 assists till date. Speaking of the titles, he has won 10 La Liga, 7 Copa Del Rey, 8 Supernova De Espana, 4 Champions League, 3 UEFA Super Cup and 3 Club World Cups for the club. Even after so much success, it really looks like every good thing must come to an end.
Just last month, Argentina won the 2021 Copa America Cup, and Messi also won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot for the game. He is also Barcelona’s all time top scorer, and also the recipient of 6 Ballon d’Or, making him the first footballer ever to do so. Messi is also the second footballer to earn more than $1 Billion dollars in his lifetime, behind Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo.
Before this, some other players have left the club due to various reasons. Some of the players are Neymar Jr., Luis Suarez, Andres Iniesta, etc. As of now, it has not been sure which club he is going to join next.
Fellow Barcelona player Phiillipe Coutinho expressed his feelings on Messi leaving the club on his Instagram writing:
“@leomessi THANK YOU so much for everything. A very great honor to have met you and played alongside you. Very thankful for how you have treated me and my family during that time! I wish you much success in your future and may GOD always bless your home and your family.”
21 year old Spanish player Riqui Puig also took to his Instagram and thanked Lionel Messi writing:
“I’ve been able to live the dream of any child whose passion is football. Being able to share locker room and equipment with the best player in the world. Living, learning and competing with him is the best thing that has happened to me in the last two years. Thank you Leo. You will be greatly missed. Best of luck.”
Since this news broke out, Messi has been trending on Twitter, and there has been a lot of speculation that he is going to join Paris Saint-Germain Football Club. Just three days ago, Brazilian star Neymar Jr., posted a picture with Lionel Messi, which further sparked this theory.
So where will Lionel Messi be transferd ?
As of now, Lionel Messi has been signed to Paris Saint-Germain and will don jersey number 30, leaving his jersey number 10 as fellow PSG player Neymar Jr. also got that same number. He was grandly given a farewell from Barcelona, and fans wept for him as he left.
Messi is now in Paris with his new team. The official Instagram of PSG posted a lot of spoilers that an Argentine player is going to join the team soon.
“Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to announce the signing of Leo Messi on a two-year contract with an option of a third year.”
On Messi’s arrival, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Chairman and CEO of PSG says, “I am delighted that Lionel Messi has chosen to join Paris Saint-Germain and we are proud to welcome him and his family to Paris. He has made no secret of his desire to continue competing at the very highest level and winning trophies, and naturally our ambition as a club is to do the same.”
