Most of the 90s kids grew up watching Disney and Nickelodeon. These networks gave us one of the best memories of our childhood. With the fashion of reviving some old shows, such as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, another one of our favorite childhood shows is getting a reboot. It’s iCarly, the very popular sitcom on Nickelodeon. Let’s get into it.
The original iCarly first aired in 2007, running for five years and six seasons with 97 episodes. The show tells the story of Carly Shay, who starts an internet show with her best friend Sam Puckett and Freddie Benson, with the help of her older brother, Spencer Shay. The web show is named iCarly and takes place in their apartment, and when the show starts to get success, it becomes hard for them to balance their normal life and their life as internet stars.
iCarly stars Miranda Cosgrove as Carly Shay, Jennette McCurdy as Sam Puckett, Jerry Trainor as Spencer Shay, Nathan Kress as Freddie Benson, Noah Munck as Gibby, Mary Scheer as Marissa Benson, Deena Dill as Charlotte, Reed Alexander as Nevel Papperman, etc.
The show was very popular during the time of its run, and was nominated for Best Children’s program five times in Emmys. Not only that, the show had cameos from very popular celebrities such as Michelle Obama, One Direction, Kenan Thompson, Jimmy Fallon, Plain White T’s, Emma Stone, David Archuleta, etc. After the show ended in 2012, it is all set to return back in 2021, with a few of the original cast and characters.
The official trailer for the show dropped on 2nd June, 2021, and started by showing some of the moments from the original show, including the very popular spaghetti tacos. As it was shown that iCarly is taking a break in 2012, the year changes to 2021, and it is announced iCarly is back. The popular “Pear Phone” from Nickelodeon also appears, which has been updated now. It is basically an iPhone, but the apple symbol is replaced by the pear symbol.
Not only Miranda Cosgrove, but Jerry Trainor and Nathan Kress also appear in the trailer, and surprisingly it looks like they are allowed to swear now. Trainor’s character Spencer says, “Dammit”, which really had us make “Surprised Pikachu’s Face”, as we were not used to hearing these kinds of words in the children’s program.
In the original series, Carly was not the only one in the web show. She was accompanied by her best friend, Sam, but as Jennette McCurdy has quit acting, her character is not returning back. Instead, we get to see a new character of Harper Raines, played by Laci Mosley, who is now Carly’s best friend. Besides Harper, there is another new character of Millicent Benson, played by Jaidyn Triplett, who is Freddie’s step-daughter in the show.
As most of the kids who grew up watching the show are in their 20s now, they can really add a lot of adult moments in the show. Spencer is seen drinking beer openly, which will be problematic if it was shown in the original series.
Freddie’s over protective mother, Marissa Benson, played by Mary Scheer, is also seen in the trailer, who spoils his date with a girl by saying, “Freddie, I put your warm milk in your thermos next to your bed.” That was definitely a LOL moment.
Other characters seen in the trailer from the original show includes Principal Ted Franklin, played by Tim Russ, and Nevel Papperman, played by Reed Alexander. Principal Franklin is seen in the background of a house party, and Nevel seems to appear as a robot in the same party.
It is also seen that Harper sets up a date for Carly, but she walks out after he starts to gargle his throat. The trailer ends with Carly asking Freddie, “You think you can shoot me using that filter that makes my cheek bones all (makes a pout)?” to which Freddie replies, “Like an alien?” Here, Carly says, “A sexy alien.” Now that was a shocker for almost every viewer as their language has changed a lot. From Spencer saying “Dammit” to Carly using the word “Sexy”, the reboot looks like it is completely focused on those children who are now grown up.
As of the trailer, we cannot say what this show has to offer, but we would like to see the continuation of a lot of stories from the original show. As we know, Freddie had a crush on Carly, and they share a goodbye kiss. We hope to see if there is any kind of romance between them or not. Also, we knew Sam went to Los Angeles and met Cat Valentine, played by Ariana Grande from another Nickelodeon show Victorious, and they got their own spin-off series, Sam & Cat, but we are curious to know if Sam and Carly are still in touch or not.
We still don’t know how Harper met Carly, and who is the mother of Freddie’s step daughter, Millicent. As of now, we only know these characters are there, but we have no idea if there are any other characters from the original show or not.
This reboot of iCarly is all set to premier on 17th June, 2021 on the network, Paramount+. The first three episodes will air on that same day, while the remaining episodes will be aired in a weekly format like the original show.
Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor and Nathan Kress also arrived at Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards 2021, and shared how they felt about getting back after nearly a decade.
The trailer also features the iconic “Swan Dress” worn by Icelandic artist Bjork in the 73rd Academy Award. That dress has also been worn by Miley Cyrus in her Disney show Hannah Montana, and now we see Miranda Cosgrove putting on the dress.
