Cameron started her career at a very young age in 2007, when she was just 11. At the age of 16, she was cast in a double role as Liv and Maddie in the Disney Channel sitcom. Liv and Maddie gave her so much fame and critical acclaim for her performance that she went on to win Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series.

Later, she was cast as Mal, daughter of Maleficent, in the Disney Channel original movie, Descendants. The Descendants franchise has three parts together, and the animated one is under development.

Besides acting, she is also an amazing singer. Cameron sang the title song for Liv and Maddie called “Better in Stereo”, and also sang a lot of other songs for Descendants franchise like “If Only”, “Rotten to the Core”, “Ways to be Wicked”, “Good to be Bad”, etc. After opting out from Disney, she has also had her solo singing career and has released songs like “We Belong”, “Lazy Baby”, etc.

In an interview with Grazia Magazine, the 25 year old Dove Cameron, reflected on being thrust into the public eye at a young age, while she was dealing with tragedy at home. According to Grazia, “Cameron has experienced her fair share of grief and loss” and she describes her childhood as “a strange mix of highs and very low lows.”

Cameron says that she grew up watching the films her father cared about, such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Gone with the Wind. Because their household was the finance, and became increasingly unstable, she cites that the films and music were the escape route for her. Dove says, “I think I fell in love with the idea of what the world looked like in movies, versus what my world really looked like.”

At the tender age of 15, Dove’s father committed suicide, as he was struggling from mental health issues. She explains that, “His life was always a very emotionally volatile life for him. And so, as his children, we came along on that ride with him.” Following the death of her father, she officially changed her name from Chloe Celeste Hosterman to Dove Cameron, as her father used to call her Dove.

Even after coming to limelight and being extremely popular, fame didn’t come easy for her as she suffered a lot of anxiety and panic attacks while having to appear in public, in the mass. She says, “I went from being in high school to that. And you only really know how that’s going to interact with your biology when it happens. Sorry to say, I thought I knew that I was gonna be OK with that, and you just don’t know.”

The A.G.E.N.T.S of Shield star, also went on to say that it took years for her to be recognized in public as she never went to any events. For the first time, when she was publicly recognized in a store, she had a panic attack. Not only that, but Dove also came out as a part of the LGBT+ community as a bisexual, last year.

Dove says that the last year in quarantine helped her to realize her sense of self. She says, “I had, like, a year where I was just not witnessed by anybody. And I wasn’t recognized ever and I didn’t go to any events”, continuing, “And I think when I could let my nervous system go back to an equilibrium that U had before I was ever exposed to the public eye, then I could kind of heal whatever was not reacting well in me.

It used to just send me into a state of terror, I guess, and now I feel like I can tackle it, because… I don’t know. I guess I have a better sense of who I am.”

Ending the interview, she says, “I think that everything in life comes back to how you feel about yourself. I just feel a lot more autonomous and I love myself. It took me a long time to love myself and even longer to like myself. And now that I feel like I’ve done both to the best of my ability so far – until I redefine what that means again – it’s just changed everything. When you don;t hate yourself anymore, the world opens up.”

Dove is currently seen as Betsy in the Apple TV+ show Schmigadoon!. She is all set to reprise her role of Mal in Descendants: The Royal Wedding, and is also going to star as Bubbles in the upcoming Powerpuff Girls live action series in The CW.
