The success of BTS is undeniable right now. All thanks to the seven boys who have been giving the best as they can, and we as an audience are taking everything that they are offering. BTS is not only known for making good music, but also known for breaking records. Let us see what they have achieved this time.
As we know, BTS’s previous song “Butter” has been on top of the Billboard Chart since seven consecutive weeks, and it was nearly going to beat the record of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License”, which stayed on top for eight weeks. Olivia Rodrigo was the only artist this year to have two number one songs in the chart. One is “Driver’s License”, and the other is “Good 4 U”.
But now, it looks like BTS is also the new artist to have two number one songs in the chart. “Permission to Dance” was released on 9th July, and it was written by Ed Sheeran, Johnny McDaid, Steve Mac and Jenna Andrews. Ed Sheeran had previously worked with BTS to co-write the song “Make It Right” from their album “Map of the Soul: Persona”.
Just as “Permission to Dance” was released, it received very good reviews and like always, the BTS Army streamed it as much as they could. The song went on to reach number one in the Billboard Hot 100 chart, replacing themselves. As mentioned above, “Butter” was reigning the chart for six consecutive weeks, and with “Permission to Dance”, it is the band’s seventh week on the chart.
BTS became the first artist to replace themselves since Drake in 2018, when his song “In My Feelings” replaced his own song “Nice for What”. Also, this song is their fifth number one song on the chart, and that too they achieved it within ten months. Their first number one hit was “Dynamite” which was released last year, and since then their other song like “Savage Love Remix” and “Life Goes On”, have also went on to become number one in 2020.
Also, BTS became the first group to do so since Black Eyed Peas in 2009. They also became the artists with the fastest accumulation of five number one singles since Michael Jackson in 1988. They also became the group with most number one single debuts.
Talking about the song, Alethea Legaspi writes for Rolling Stones saying, “Like the title suggests, the track is all about upbeat grooving and enjoying summer fun. In the accompanying video, RM, Suga, J-Hope, Jungkook, V, Jimin and Jin dance outside in a sunny locale, at a Laundromat, and on a patio. The buoyant song inspires others to move to the rhythms as well, from office and school employees to kids on a tennis court.”
“Permission to Dance” is also BTS’s third only English song after “Dynamite” and “Butter”. It received over 72 Million views on YouTube within the first 24 hours, and currently has over 192 Million views, and is still trending in different locations worldwide. Like “Dynamite” received over 1 Billion views in about eight months, and “Butter” became the most viewed video within the first 24 hours on YouTube with over 108 Million views, “Permission to Dance” is also expected to break some record.
Not only in the Billboard Hot 100, but the song also topped Billboard Global 200 Chart and Billboard Global Excluding United States, replacing “Good 4 U” by Olivia Rodrigo and “Bad Habits” by Ed Sheeran respectively.
With every new song, BTS is proving that they are here to stay, and is really taking K-pop to the next level and making it more mainstream.
