On 2nd June, 2021, Billie Eilish released her second song from the new album, titled as “Lost Cause”. The music video got quick attention and we got to see a different Billie that we were not used to seeing before. It is said that “Happier Than Ever” will have more cheerful and joyous songs unlike her previous album. The music video has been praised by a lot of people and currently holds over 45 million views on YouTube.

Even after the success of the song, the music video has been criticized for fetisizing lesbian relationship. In the music video, we can see Billie and her girl gang having a slumber party, dancing, enjoying and doing everything that makes them happy wearing Kim Kardashian’s Skims collection. She is also seen kissing a girl and enjoying a girl twerking. All these things didn’t settle well with the fans from LGBTQIA+ community and soon started to call her out.

Amid all the backlash, the “Bad Guy” singer posted some behind the scenes and screenshots of the music video on her Instagram with the caption saying “i love girls”. Everyone quickly jumped into the conclusion that Eilish is coming out of her closet. Yet some fans accused her of queerbaiting.

So what is queerbaiting?

Queerbaiting is a way of depicting someone or something that hints LGBTQIA+ community without actually being a part of that community. It is wrong because saying you are a part of the community just to sell your stuff when you are really not, and also it is hurting the sentiments of actual people in the community.

Before coming to the limelight, Eilish has said that she has dated two men in the past. No way has anybody ever got a hint that she maybe lesbian, bisexual or pansexual. Plus she is rumored to be dating actor Michael Tyler Vorce. They both were spotted together in Disneyland just the next day after the controversial post was posted. People clearly stated that Eilish is straight and she is queerbaiting using Pride Month as an excuse.

Some people also started to dig the past of Vorce, and some of his racist, sexist and homophobic posts have resurfaced. In one of his Facebook status, he body shamed Adele saying, “Adele looks like a British Miss Piggy”. Also, he slut shamed girls saying, “For the record, girls that say they are free spirits are just sluts.” There were also posts of him using the “n-word”. Eilish was accused not only for queerbaiting but also dating someone who has this kind of mentality.

The fuel was added to the fire after one of Eilish’s other actions. One of her fan wrote on Instagram saying, “This fandom is so embarrassing sometimes like why would you go in someone’s comments and say something that you literally don’t know is true and something y’all LITERALLY MADE UP, sometimes y’all are so dumb. Some of you just need to learn how to mind your business.” This post was liked by the “Ocean Eyes” singer herself, and fans got angry at her because the post literally says Billie’s fans are embarrassing and dumb.

Bille’s fans flew in rage as she agreed with whatever the post said instead of appreciating her fans. This caused a lot of outrage, making some of the fans burn down her merchandise. Some also said that they are never going to purchase any of her merchandise and have cancelled her.

This isn’t the first time Eilish has been accused of something like this. In 2019, she was accused of homophobia after the release of her song “Wish You Were Gay”. About the song, she said that is about a guy on whom she had a crush on, but he didn’t love her back, and she wished that he was gay so that there will be a reason why. She once jokingly said, “I wrote the song and made him fuck a dude. I’m fucking proud bro except not really though because I was really into him, like so into him, he’s so hot oh my God.” Soon after this, she was called out.

Recently she posted a selfie on her Instagram with the caption saying “i’m tireddddddd”, but we don’t know if she is referencing the current situation or not. Moreover she also lost nearly over 23k followers after this controversy.

Now we have to see if Billie will address the current scandal surrounding her sexuality and “Lost Cause”.

Do you like Billie Eilish’s new song? What do you think about this? Is she really queerbaiting or not? Do let us know.
